UPHOLSTERY CLEANING
The upholstery cleaning industry has evolved considerably over the last decade. The industry today has a great variety fabrics and fibers. Some fabrics today even use a combination of fibers. It is very important to apply the proper method of cleaning to the fabric to prevent damage.
Most fabrics today fall into one of two categories, natural fiber or synthetic fiber. Natural fibers can be protein or cellulosic based. Protein based natural fibers are materials such as silk and wool. Cellulosic natural fibers are fabrics such as cotton and linen. Natural fibers are most often going to be Foam Cleaned or Dry Cleaned. Synthetic fibers are usually cleaned with hot water extraction (steamed cleaned). Most companies only buy furniture with fabric that is steam cleanable.
Professional technicians today are faced with the challenge of properly identifying fibers and applying the proper cleaning method. Some upholstery manufacturers have cleaning tags under the cushions. These tags can usually identify the method of cleaning required for that fabric. Many carpet cleaners are apprehensive in regards to cleaning upholstery because inexperience can lead to ruined fabric and furniture replacement or recovering. Reputable cleaners are optimistic when cleaning because knowledge equals confidence.
