Water Damage
The water restoration industry has evolved considerable over the years. The original concept was to extract the water, and allow natural drying to occur. The demand for the field of psychrometry, the science of drying, became evident for not only public safety concerns, but also the cost and time saving of salvaging structure.
Whatever the source of the water damage, the impact on the ecology within the affected structure is important for healthy indoor conditions. Biological growth is always a great concern in the water restoration industry. Wet structure paired with favorable temperatures for microorganisms can initiate microbial amplification. The importance of a timely response to any water damage is necessary to prevent secondary damage, to stop amplification of microorganisms, and to minimize potential health effects.
Due to the level of expertise required to properly dry structure, educated professionals should always be selected to handle any water restoration. Our technicians are certified and experienced in microbiology, biocide chemistry, inspection techniques, psychrometry, thermodynamics, building science, and evaporation and dehumidification theory. Along with our extensive training requirements, we deploy state of the art equipment to dry residential or commercial structure.
Customer Guidance
In our industry, water is categorized in one of three categories based upon contaminant and bacteria count.
Category 1 (clean water source)
Advisable:
- Eliminate the source of water if possible or contact repair person (plumber).
- If there is no risk of electrical shock, turn off circuit breakers supplying electricity to wet areas: unplug and remove any small electrical devices currently located on wet floor coverings or other wet surfaces.
- Remove and secure small furniture items as possible to minimize rust or stains.
- Place aluminum foil under legs of wood furniture, especially antiques that may permanently stain carpet.
- Hang draperies and pin up furniture skirts as possible to prevent contact with wet floors.
- Remove books, shoes, paper goods, and small items. (Don’t forget under beds and in closets)
- Remove and secure breakables, and moisture sensitive high value items.
- Make plans for restoration crews to remove large items from affected areas.
- Be aware that time is a critical factor for mitigation. Restoration may result in adverse effects or additional damage to structure and contents if action is not taken promply.
Not Advisable:
- Using your home vacuum (wet/dry vacuum) since electrical shock may result.
- Placing newspaper on wet surface since newspaper ink transfers easily.
- Activating the HVAC system if it has been directly in contact with water.
- Adjusting indoor temperature unless instructed to do so by qualified restoration technician.
- Entering an area that has standing water because of the potential for electrical shock.
Category 2 and Category 3 (unsanitary water)
Advisable:
- Turn off the HVAC or air handling system if safely accessible.
- Turn off circuit breakers supplying electricity to wet areas if there is no risk of electrical shock.
- Protect yourself against contact with sewage or contaminated items.
- Wear gloves, boots, goggles, protective clothing and a respirator if you absolutely have to perform or come in contact with any contaminated items.
- Wash your hands after handling any sewage-contaminated items.
- Contact your Doctor if you have any adverse health effects.
- Be aware time is critical!!!
Not Advisable:
- Using any electrical equipment while standing in water.
- Using your home vacuum (wet/dry vacuum) since electrical shock may result.
- Consuming any food that had been left out.
- Using personal hygiene items that have been left out in a contaminated environment.
· DO NOT STAY IN THE BUILDING IF YOU:
- Have respiratory problems, such as allergies and asthma.
- You are under age of 2 or over age of 60.
- Have a weakened immune system because of illness, medication or any other reason.
